1) Sansabai House - Great value for money, the rooms here are lovely with tiled floor, comfy bed, thick curtains, small balcony, TV and spotlessly clean. There's free wifi for your laptop in the lobby area with sofa. Just cold water showers. Fan 270 baht Air-con 370 baht Website: www.sansabai-korat.com. 2) Kwanruen Resort - Just next to beautiful Bung Talau lake, this resort/hotel has some wonderful rooms. The hotel itself has a fresh, clean air to it, as do the rooms. The standard rooms (700 baht nightly) are nice with a comfy looking bed but the real draw here are the deluxe rooms at 1,200 baht - they're very spacious and modern, with inviting sofa, bed and balcony as well as a microwave! Have a look for yourself on their website: www.kwanruen-resort.com. (opens in new window) If you stay monthly, the rooms will cost a lot less - 3 times less! 7,000 baht for the standard rooms and 12,000 baht for the deluxe rooms. Tel: +66 (0)44 957551 (replace the last 2 digits from 52 to 59 to also get through).
3) Rachaphruk - Large, impressive looking hotel on a busy road but set back far enough for noise not to be an issue. Although the actual hotel building doesn't have great design, the entrance and lobby area are eye-catching. The deluxe rooms, at 1,500 baht per night were certainly some of the best rooms I saw in the town. They're very spacious, including writing desk, sofa, flatscreen TV and a lovely bathroom with brick style bath. Try to get a corner room and on a high floor for great views of the city. The double/twin rooms, at 1,200 baht per night are good and have the same brick style bath but aren't memorable like the deluxe rooms. The suite rooms, which I didn't see, priced at 4,500 baht per night, must be extra-special! See the rooms for yourself on their website: www.rachaphruk.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 341 222 Email: admin@rachaphruk.com
4) Assadang Hotel - Run by a friendly lady who's English is excellent. Rooms are small but carefully furnished and very clean and come with air-con and hot water bathroom. Rooms decrease in price the higher you go up in the hotel! So for the same room, on the 2nd floor, it's 500 baht, on the 3rd floor, 450 baht and on the 4th floor, 400 baht! Tel: +66 (0) 44 242514 / 257330 Address: 315 Assadang Road.
5) Hotel with no English Name - A little way down Dech Uon Soi 13 street, you can't miss this large hotel/apartment block. Rooms are a little on the small side for 500 baht per night but do include fridge, TV, hot water and air-con. It's right next to the lovely Bung Talau Lake Park which is a big draw-card for this hotel. If you stay monthly, you can have a room for just 4,500 per month plus bills (including 9,000 baht deposit). Tel: +66 (0)44 957727 (replace the last 2 digits with 28, 29 or 30 to get through).
6) Tokyo Mansion - Small rooms in this hotel, but quite nicely furnished with TV and hot water. The rooms are definitely cared for and are clean. There wasn't much of a window in the rooms I was shown. Fan rooms are 204 baht per night, air-con rooms, 312 baht nightly. Tel: +66 (0)44 242873 / 257179
7) The Airport Hotel - Large hotel with quite nice looking 500 baht rooms with air-con and hot shower. The suite rooms for 1,000 baht are great - very spacious with sofa. A bit of an awkward location if you don't have a car or motorbike as you're a couple of kilometers from the center. See the stuffed kanoky (Japanese fox)...the supposed good luck charm at reception (not such good luck for the kanoky). Website: www.theairportkorathotel.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 275305 /275306 / 275307
8) Chaiyaphruk Grand Hotel - Decent rooms with comfy looking beds and plenty of windows. Nice views of the city from the higher floors. With air-con and TV, rooms are priced at 450 baht per night and 9,000 baht monthly. Tel: +66 (0)44 275 102 / 275 197
9) Sakol Hotel Korat - Large hotel that doesn't look very impressive from the outside but the fan rooms for just 150 baht have a rocking chair and either a sofa or a table and chairs. Air-con rooms for 400 baht nightly are also quite nice and come with TV too.
10) The I Yara Hotel Korat - This 150 room, large hotel looks quite grand from the outside but could do with a paint! There's carpeted floors throughout the hotel and the large lobby area is nice. The standard rooms, at 450 baht are just OK. The deluxe rooms, including breakfast, are quite nice. The suite rooms, at 1,200 baht, are spacious and decent with a comfy looking sofa and are good value. Wifi for your laptop is 50 baht per hour. Tel: +66 (0)44 268777
11) First Hotel Korat - Next to bus station 1 with...views of the bus station! The fan rooms, at 250 baht nightly are quite spacious and have an 'old' feel - complete with telephone that looks like it was in use in the '70's!. The air-con rooms are smaller but better furnished with comfy looking beds and include hot water, priced at 360 baht. The friendly staff speak no English. Tel: +66 (0)44 255117
12) Thai Hotel - Rooms have little character but are a decent size and the beds look comfy and an effort is made to keep the rooms clean. It's on a very busy traffic street so try to get a room that's not facing the road. Fan rooms cost 250 baht nightly, air-con rooms, 350 baht per night. Tel: +66 (0)44 242253
13) Tokyo Hotel - A large, not very attractive looking hotel. The rooms are OK. They've certainly seen a better day but are nice and clean. The rooms I was shown had windows backing on to a wall. The fan rooms, at 250 baht per night, are competitively priced but the air-con, at 450 baht nightly, seem a bit overpriced. Tel: +66 (0)44 242788
14) Korat Hotel - Large hotel with an attractive lobby area. OK Rooms but I felt they were a bit overpriced. The standard air-con rooms cost 500 baht, the deluxe rooms with bath are 890 baht and the large suite rooms are 1,800 baht per night. Wifi for your laptop is an extra 50 baht per hour. Inside the hotel is a entrance to the attached karaoke place, with photos of karaoke ladies so this may give you an idea of what kind of hotel it is. Website: www.korat-hotel.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 341345
15) KH Chaophaya Inn - Large hotel next to one of the main shopping centers. Rooms costing 500 baht are small but clean with TV, air-con and wifi for your laptop. There's also VIP rooms for 600 baht but these were all taken so I didn't see them. For an extra 100 baht and probably larger rooms, it might be worth upgrading! Website: www.chaophayainn.com Tel: +66 (0)44 260555 Email: hotel@chaophayainn.com
16) Srivichai Hotel - Central location, attractive looking hotel from the outside. Rooms are OK but not bearing the test of time so well. For 400 baht nightly, you'll have hot water, air-con and TV. For 500 baht, you'll also get a bathtub and fridge. There's wifi in the lobby area but not in the rooms. Tel: +66 (0)44 242194 / 241284 Address: 9 - 11 Buarong Rd.
17) Hotel with no English Name - The fan rooms here for 200 baht a night are a little worn but the 300 baht air-con rooms with futon bed are quite nice. The only hotel in the area before the Airport Hotel so it's easy to spot.
18) Sripatana Hotel - Very large, old looking hotel that looks like it has seen better days. Rooms are OK but could do with a refurbishment and at 560 baht / 1,200 baht per night, you can find much better for your money. See their website:www.sripatana.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 255372
19) Ratchasima Hotel - Cheap fan rooms at 160 baht per night - for budget travelers, the rooms might be OK. For the air-con rooms with TV, priced at 240 baht, there's certainly better options in town. The rooms have squat, Asian style toilets. There's an attempt to keep them clean but the rooms do have a musty odour. Tel: +66 (0)44 242837
20) Eknakorn Hotel - As you go up to the rooms in the tiny elevator, you might get a certain claustrophobic, danger feeling, but the hotel does have good escape stairs in the event of a fire. The fan rooms, priced at 180 baht per night, have small seats. The air-con rooms, at 270 baht nightly have a TV and are just OK.
21) Farthai Hotel - Rooms are slotted into to this hotel to fit as many as possible! The rooms are OK. Single fans rooms with cold water and TV cost 260 baht, double fan, 360 per night. Air-con rooms with hot water and TV: single, 390 baht, air-con double, 430 baht per night. There's a long drop in the center of the hotel to the hard ground below which would worry me if I had kids. Tel: +66 (0)44 267390 / 267391
22) Chumphol - Quite centrally located hotel, the rooms are old-looking. Single fan rooms cost 250 baht, double fan, 290 baht, per night. Single air-con, 340 baht, double air-con, 390 baht per night. Rooms have TV and hot water. There's a sign outside the hotel which says 'The lowest price in town' but as you'll be able to tell from my list here, they're clearly not. Tel: +66 (0)44 257121
23) Potong Hotel - Really not good here! If you have to stay here, try to get a room facing away from the noisy street. The cheap fan rooms were small, priced at 190/240 baht nightly (single/double) - slightly larger but still small, the air-con rooms were characterless, and felt like they needed air, with no window. These were priced at 300/350 baht nightly. There were no lids on the toilet seats - the rooms looked like they could do with a good scrub. Tel: +66 (0)44 251962
24) Dusit Princess - Large hotel, quite a few kilometers from the center of town. Part of the large 'Dusit' hotel chain. Room prices range from about 1,400 to about 7,000 baht nightly. I didn't see the rooms, just the outside of the hotel. For the hotels website, click HERE. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 256 629
25) Sima Thani Hotel - Large hotel, a few kilometers from the town center. It's close to the tourist office and not too far from the main train station but an uncomfortable walking distance from the main town, along busy roads. Advertised on their website as a five-star deluxe hotel, the rooms are priced between 1,400 and 15,000 baht nightly. I didn't see inside the hotel, just from the outside. Website: www.simathani.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)44 213 100
Contact the friendly lady manager, Tim, at Sansabai House (number 1) if you're thinking of staying for a month or more in Korat. She has rooms for between just 1,500 and 2,000 baht per month (not including electric and water bills). I didn't see these rooms but if the standard of her Sansabai Hotel is anything to go by, the rooms should be well-priced. Contact Tim on 081 547 3006 or head in to the hotel. Her English is very good.
