Backpacking Advice
Need backpacking advice? I've been living out of a backpack on and off for 6 years now. I think I'm qualified! It's a fine art though, I'm still learning! If you get things wrong it can be frustrating and potentially expensive...bringing things you needn't have brought, then maybe the cost of sending them home. There's also the question of whether the lifestyle truly suits you. Do you really want to leave your creature comforts for a smelly bag! There's a big difference between a 2 week package holiday and backpacking Thailand for 3 months. Is it safe? Will I meet other backpackers? Will I get lonely? Will I have enough money? What If I don't like Thailand? Maybe these are some of the questions you've been asking yourself. If you're just getting started backpacking, you've come to the right place! The first thing I feel I should say is: DON"T BRING TOO MUCH!. There are a few travelers who carry heavy bags and seem untroubled, but for most of us, walking around with a 25kg backpack is not fun. If you can, try to keep the weight below 15kg.....In 2008, I traveled around India with just 12kg and it made a world of difference from my usual 20kgs. When you arrive at a new destination, there isn't that urgency to find a guesthouse and get that weight off your shoulders....add the 30+ degree temperatures and, with a weighty backpack, you'll often find yourself drenched in sweat. For tips on keeping the weight below 15kg, visit my 'To bring or not to bring' page. More coming on this page shortly!
