Chiang Mai Accommodation Around Nimmanhaemin Road, to the West of the Old City Moat
Chiang Mai accommodation - Luxury apartments and hotels, boutique guesthouses and one lovely cheap guesthouse! This area is popular with young people for the numerous stylish bars and restaurants that are scattered along the main Nimmanhaemin Road and down the many small streets that link to it. This is a relative new area and the developers have done well with their design - the many linking streets have kept the area quiet and peaceful. From some of the streets to the west of Nimmanhaemin Road, there's great view of nearby Doi Suthep Mountain.
This area is a fashionable area to live, reflected by the many upscale apartment buildings, most of which I've included below. This area doesn't have the history or the charming temple streets of the old city moat area, but that's only a kilometer or so away. You're also closer to the mountain and close to a large shopping complex with cinema. With a bicycle or motorbike to keep you mobile, this area is definitely worth considering.

I) Pun Pun Organic Vegetarian Restaurant - delicious food popular with both Thais and foreigners. Great outside garden seating around around a large tree. Dishes good value 30 - 50 baht. It's slightly hidden behind the 'Monk Chat' building in Wat Suan Dok. Closed on Wednesdays. (90 percent sure - could be Tuesdays!)
J) and K) Chinese Vegetarian Restaurants - Popular Thai places to eat - Try the Khow Soi at 'J' (Chiang Mai style crispy noodles in an almost Indian style sauce for 20 baht) Dishes - about 25 baht. You'll notice these restaurants for their large yellow signs outside wth Chinese characters on them. 'J' is before Siriwichai Rd (name not shown on map) and is open from 5am to 3pm and closed on Sundays. I'm not sure exactly when 'K' is open but it is open on Sundays and is after Siriwichai Rd. 'K' has 'Vegetarian' in English written on the yellow sign.
L) Cake cottage - on a very quiet street, this place is a great place for a chat or a read of a book. The tree at the entrance is stunning. The owner did tell me the name but I forgot!...it has hundreds of dangling branch strands that almost reach the ground. Head here and see for yourself. Food between 40 and 80 baht.
You might feel I'm a bit lenient towards vegetarian resturants- well actualy I am!..but also there are comparitively few vegetarian places compared to places that serve meat so I feel I want to highlight them. If you want to eat meat/fish, there are scores of nice looking restaurants in this area. If you want details of meat (and vegetarian!) restaurants inside the moat area, you can click here.
