5) Hang Chow Hotel - Lots of wooden furniture in the rooms of this attractive hotel. Rooms cost between RM30 and RM45 per night. (opens in new window)

6) Eastern & Oriental Hotel - Spectacular hotel. Opened in the year 1885, this is surely the best hotel on Penang island. Rooms range in price from US$334 up to US$3367 per night. (opens in new window)

19) Star Lodge - Owned by the same management who own 75 Travellers Lodge (18) and Oriental Guest House (17), I didn't see the rooms here but you can see the rooms and more info on their website: www.starlodge.net. (opens in new window). They advertise themselves as a step above the other 2 guest houses. Rooms range in price from 28 Malaysian Ringgit per night up to 60 Ringgit nightly. 20) Hotel Mingood - On a fairly quiet road, this large hotel has quite nice rooms with TV, fridge, sofa, hot water bathtub and free wifi in the rooms. Walk-in rate is 100 Malaysian Ringgit but if you book through their website, you can stay for between 70 ad 80 Ringgit per night. Website: www.hotelmingood.com. 21) Choeng Fatt Tze Mansion - Built by Cheon Fatt Tze, a renowned business tycoon, at the turn of the 20th Century, this large building is proud to show off its Asian/Western architecture - there are actually twice daily tours of the place, costing 10 Ringgit. 22) Hotel Malaysia - Very large hotel with 130 rooms on busy Penang Road, the rooms here are quite nice and come with TV, comfy looking seats and hot water bathtub. 23) Hotel Regal Malaysia - Situated about 500 meters from the main center of Georgetown, this smart, large hotel has rooms that, although a little small, have nice hot water bathrooms, TV and are spotless. There's free wifi in soe of the rooms so think about requesting....Room price in September, 2009 was 80 Malaysian Ringgit, 50 cents (RM 80.50). Website: www.hotelregalmalaysia.com.my. 24) The Merchant Hotel - Large hotel on busy Penang Road. The standard room (88 ringgit/night) and superior room (111 Ringgit/night - 3 people) I saw were OK, with sofa chair, TV and Ok furnishings. For 280 Ringgit, the executive Room was nice, with an attractive bathroom and separate lounge are with 3 sofa chairs, great views and breakfast included in the price. No Website it seems... 25) Modern Hotel - Despite its name, the hotel has an old, simple but appealing style, with nice doors to the rooms. Rooms for 25 Ringgit and 35 Ringgit per night include desk, sink, window, with toilet and shower outside. For 40 Ringgit per night (air-con: 45 Ringgit), you can have quite a large room with hot shower and toilet inside. The hotel is very central, a few meters from Penang road. 26) Eng Loh Hotel - Hotel with cheap rooms. For 20 Ringgit, the room is small and basic with no sink...for 25 Ringgit per night, I saw a nice big corner room (with sink) upstairs that had an airy feel and plenty of windows. The fan room with hot water shower, costing 35 Ringgit nightly, was just OK. You can pay an extra 10 Ringgit per night in this room to have air-con. 27) Banana New Guest House (on Penang road) - I wasn't too impressed with the price of the rooms at this guest house. The rooms are new and nicely decorated but for 60 Ringgit per night (share bathroom), 70 Ringgit (bathroom inside) and 100 Ringgit (for 3 people), the rooms that I saw were small and had no windows. 28) Tourist Guest House - Guest House on busy Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street), the rooms here were just OK. Small fan rooms cost 20 Ringgit per night. Air-con rooms, 25 Ringgit. 29) Banana New Guest House (on Chulia Street) - Right in the heart of the backpacker area, on livley Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street) the rooms here range in price from 18 Ringgit per night (single fan room) up to 90 Ringgit per night (double room, air-con, bathroom inside, TV). I saw 2 rooms - the single for RM18 was a box-room - no window and very small. I also saw a 40 Ringgit room (double with air-con, no bathroom) - this room was better, in a nicer area of the guest house, and larger but had no windows. 30) Cathay Heritage Boutique Hotel - Set in an attractive building that's over 100 years old (see picture here). (opens in new window), unfortunately, the rooms are overpriced. For 75 Ringgit per night, the room I saw, with private hot water bathroom with bathtub and TV was not great - the bathtub could have been cleaner. 31) E & A Budget Hotel - Cheap rooms here. The building had a nice, ol style, but I found the rooms boring. 25 Ringgit per night will get you a fan room. 35 Ringgit nightly and you'll get a toilet and cold water shower in the room. 32) Day & Night Back Packers - Cheap guesthouse right in the heart of Chulia Street, the backpacker area. Because of its location, this place is popluar but the rooms are just OK - small and simple. 18 to 20 Ringgit per night will get a single room, 24 Ringgit nightly for a double. Toilets and hot water showers are share, outside of the rooms. Tel: +60 (0)4 262 5645 Address: 319 Jalan Chulia (Chulia Street).

33) Crystal guesthouse - In the center of the backacker area on Chulia Street, this place has just OK rooms. None of the rooms I saw had windows. A double room with fan here costs 30 Ringgit per night, with share hot water shower and toilet outside. 38 Ringgit gives you a double room with air-con. 50 Ringgit and you'll get a toilet inside the room. 34) Waldorf Hotel - Large hotel but the rooms, priced at 57.50 Ringgit (RM57 and a half) per night, were a bit dull. Included in the room is a TV and bathtub. 35) Jim's Place Cafe - There are 3 small, simple rooms here, for about 20 Ringgit per night, with double bed and share toilet and hot water shower. Downstairs is the Reggae & Rock Cafe. (I've heard is a place long term Koh Phangnan (in Thailand) stayers love to stay when they come to Penang...). Website: www.jimsplace-penang.com. 36) Newasakin Rumah Tumpangan - Useful if you want to find a room quickly having just arrived on Penang by ferry from Butterworth, rooms here are smallish and just OK. 35 ringgit will give you a fan room with toilet and hot water shower in the room (40 Ringgit - air-con). 37) Love Lane Inn - Quite a popular place to stay, the room I saw was a box room - very small, with no window, nice and clean, costing 18 Ringgit per night. There's also a dormitory here (not sure of the price, probably less than 10 Ringgit nightly). Cold water showers and toilets outside the room. There's free internet here. 38) Towne House Hotel - Large hotel on busy Penang Road, the room I saw here, costing 69 Ringgit per night (1 or 2 people), had seen better days...the carpet was old, some of the wallpaper was torn. There's a balcony in the room, a small TV and fridge and hot water bathtub. Tel: +60 (0)4 263 8621 / +60 (0)4 263 8722 Address: 70 Jalan Penang (Penang Road).

39) White House Hotel - Centrally located on Penang road, the rooms here were just OK, with a small window. Fan rooms with hot shower inside the rom (toilet outside) cost 38 Ringgit per night (air-con: 46 Ringgit). There's a communal TV to watch. 40) Federal Hotel - On busy Penang Road, rooms here are just OK. Single rooms cost 42 Ringgit per night, with air-con, balcony, fridge and hot water shower inside, but the room felt old/used. (50 to 60 Ringgit for a TV/double bed). There's a communal TV area here. Tel: +60 (0)4 2635345 Address: 39, Jalan Penang (Penang Road).

41) Peking Hotel - On Penang Road, this quite large hotel has just OK rooms for 57 and a half Ringgit per night (RM57.50). Rooms have air-con, TV and hot water bathtub but the window in the room I was shown was non-see-through so there was no view at all. Tel: +60 (0)4 263 6191 Address: 50-A Jalan Penang (Penang Road).

42) Hotel Rope Walk - This hotle is on quite a quiet road, but I wasn't impressed with the rooms - For 35 Ringgit per night (25 Ringgit for a weekly stay) the rooms have private cod water shower and toilet but the rooms didn't look very nice (air-con: 50 Ringgit). 43) Darussalam - Quite a small hotel, the rooms here were just OK and a bit small. For 40 Ringgit, you'll get air-con, TV, hot water shower in the room but the toilets are share, outside the rooms. Tel: +60 (0)4 262 2569 Address: 69 Transfer Road

44) Georgetown Guesthouse - An interesting old building on peaceful Love Lane houses the cheapest individual rooms in Georgetown. For 11 Ringgit per night, you'll get a small, box room with no window. The room I saw could have done with a scrub... (shower and toilet outside).

45) Ai Goh Hotel - Lovely building but the rooms I saw were small, dull and a bit smelly. For 25 Ringgit per night, you can get a fan room, 35 Ringgit will give you a shower in the room and air-con. 46) Kim Sun Hotel - In the heart of Chinatown, rooms here were just OK. For 26 Ringgit per night, you'll get a balcony and sink in the room. Showers and toilets are outside the rooms. Tel: +60 (0)4 261 0657 Address: 86, Lebuh Campbell (Campbell Street).

47) Island City Hotel - Quite a large hotel, the overall impression of the rooms I saw here, for between 35 Ringgit and 50 Ringgit per night, was not good. Tel: +60 (0)4 261 0770 Address: 456 Lebuh Chulia (Chulia Street).

48) Hotel Hong Ping - Large hotel, rooms here, with air-con, TV and bathroom, cost 69 Ringgit per night. The was only one staff member when I visited - he didn't want to leave the front desk and wanted me to pay for the room having just seen pictures of the room. (which looked OK!). 49) Oasiss Hotel - Otherwise known as the Swiss Hotel, the 25 Ringgit nightly rooms here, with toilet outside, were small, dark and smelly. The 35 Ringgit air-con rooms were a bit nicer. Tel: +60 (0)4 262 2345 Address: 431-F Lebuh Chulia (Chulai Street).

50) Traverse Inn (Motel) - Rooms here were not nice...the 18 Ringgit rooms were very small and simple, the 36 Ringgit, air-con rooms were, I thought, overpriced when you compare with many other guesthouses in Georgetown. Tel: +60 (0)4 261 9858 Address: 53, Kampung Malabar Road.

102) Friendship Motel - A modern, clean hotel but I thought the rooms were a bit overpriced. The 28 Ringgit single room was clean but like a box, with no window. There's centralized air-con (might get turned off during the day). The other room I saw, costing 68 ringgit per night, was a small room with TV, window and bathroom inside. 103) Merlin Hotel - Quite large rooms here, but a bit boring, with plastic chairs, fan, window, toilet and shower inside the rooms for 30 Ringgit per night. A fan double bed room costs 38 Ringgit (double bed, air-con: 45 Ringgit). The hotel is exactly opposite the Friendship Hotel (number 102 on my list, above..)

104) Oriental Hotel - Large hotel with 10 floors on busy Penang Road, there was a promotional rate on at the time of my visit (Sept, 2009). for 75 Ringgit (1 or 2 people), the room comes with air-con, TV, hot water shower and bathtub, fridge and wifi (just office hours...9 to 5, Mon to Fri). 52) Dr Sun Yat Sen's Penang Base - Base of Chinese Revolutionary leader Sun Yat Sen in 1910. See photo 1, 2 and 3 for a bit more info (opens in new window). Open 10am to 2pm, Monday to Saturday. Address: 120 Lebuh Armenian. Tel: +60 (0)4 262 0123

53) Islamic Museum - Syed Alatas Mansion. This mansion, built in 1860 was once owned by Syed Mohammad Al-Attas, a Muslim who had roots in Sumatra's (Indonesia) north-west province of Acheh (hit badly by the 2004 Tsunami). He supported the people of Acheh in their struggles with the Dutch in the 19th Century. Open: 9am to 5:30pm. (closed on Tuesdays). Entry: Adults: 3 Ringgit, Child (below 12): 1 Ringgit. 59) Pinang Peranakan Mansion see pic 1 and pic 2 (opens in new window) - once owned by a famous personality of the time, Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee (opens in new window) in the late 19th century, this attractive light green mansion now serves as a museum showing antiques of the Peranakan/Baba Nyonya community (opens in new window) Entry: 10 Ringgit (children 6 years and below enter free). Visiting hours: Monday to Friday from 9:30am to 5pm. Saturdays from 9:30am to 3pm. Appointments on Sundays and public holidays. Fort Cornwallis -see pics - Built by Sir Francis Light. (opens in new window), who took over Penang from the Sultan of Kedah in 1786, the concrete fort now houses historic cannons. I've just seen the outside. Entry is cheap, just 3 Ringgit for adults, 2 Ringgit for children. (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm). On the map above, it's located in the top right hand corner.

Penang Museum - See the top middle section of the above map. The museum houses old photos, paintings, maps, furniture and more. Built over a hundred years ago, only one section of the building remains after it was bombed during World War 11. Entry is just 1 Ringgit. City Hall - Built in 1903, this grand building has Victorian style architecture. Find it in the north-east area of the map above, close to Fort Cornwallis.


Temples / Churches / Mosques

54) Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple See pics 1 and 2. (open in new window). A community temple built in 1892. See pic 2 for more details. Free entrance.

55) Cheah Kongsi (Cheah Si Sek Tek Tong) - Hokkien Clan Temple featuring classic Chinese Architecture, built in the 1870's. The temple gates weren't open when I visited (open 9am to 5 or 6pm, Mon to Sat) but I was still able to get some pics: 1, 2 & 3 (open in new window). Tel: +60 (0)4 261 3837. Entrance is free. Khoo Kongsi - Beautifully ornate temple built at the turn of the 20th century that shows the prosperity of the Khoo clan. I didn't add this on my map, but it's easy to find. It's on Cannon square, the street that connects Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Acheh. If you visit Cheah Kongsi (number 55 above), you're very close. Entrance: 5 Ringgit (children under 12 years - 1 Ringgit). Open from 9am to 5pm daily. Address: 18, Cannon Square. Tel: +60 (0)4 264 2119

56) Teochew Temple, finished in 1870, won the 2006 UNESCO Award of Merit for Culture Heritage Conservation in the Asian-Pacific region. It used to serve the Teochew immigrants from China who came to Penang looking for work. Address: 127, Chulia Street.

57) Kapitam Keling Mosque - Originally built back at the start of the 19th century, it's had 2 renovations since and now looks very new and striking with its white paint. See pics 1 and 2 (open in new window).

58) Goddess of Mercy Temple - This temple is one of the oldest in Penang, dating back to 1728. It's very popular. Whenever I've passed the temple, there are people lighting large and small incense sticks. There's a perpetual cloud of smoke! See pic 1, 2, 3 and 4 (opens in new window). 60) Poe Choo Seah Chinese Temple - On Lebuh King (King Street).

66) Shirdi Sai Baba Society of Malaysia - Small, bustling building on Lebuh Queen street, in the heart of Little India. See details of Sai Baba of Shirdi at this wikipedia page. (opens in new window)

67) Sahaja Yoga HiHi Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi - Free Meditation Classes. On Lebuh King street, close to Lebuh Light. Tel: 012 474 7054 / 012 366 2678 / 012 407 3531

70) Hainan Temple / Temple of the Heavenly Queen - Striking, ornate decorations on this late 19th century temple, restored in 1995. See pic 1 and 2 (open in new window). It used to serve the Chinese Hainanese immigrants, who worked as sailors and cooks in Penang. On quiet Lebuh Muntri (Muntri Street). Open from 8am to 8pm daily.

72) Chinese Temple - I forgot to put this number on the map above! It's just to the left of Star Lodge (number 19, which I also forgot to put on!), on Lebuh Muntri, about 150 meters east of the Hainan Temple (number 70, above).

73) Mahamariamman Temple - Hindu Temple that started off as a shrine back in 1801. It's dedicated to the Hindu god, Sri Muthu Mariamman. On Lebuh Queen. Many gods are colorfully sculptured above the entrance.

74) Church of the Assumption - Large mid-19th Century church on Lebuh Farqhar. Visiting Hours: 11am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. Tel: +60 (0)4 261 0088

85) Meng Eng Soo Temple - Small temple along quiet Jalan Pintal Tali

86) Masjid Pintal Tali - A small mosque sharing the same name as its street - Jalan Pintal Tali

87) Large Incense Sticks often burnt here - Quite a spectacle at times, huge incense sticks seem to be frequently lit, on the pavement and also the road, emitting huge amounts of smoke. Interesting for the visitor, perhaps not quite so for people who live nearby breathing in the fumes.

62) Woodlands Vegetarian Restaurant (Indian Food) - Really great food here. Breakfast dishes of Pungal and Uppama for less than 2 Ringgit. Maslala Thosai costs just over 2 Ringgit. Try the Malai Kofta for about 3.5 Ringgit. Delicious Thalis for about 6 Ringgit. Air-con, clean, nicely furnished restaurant. Open: 8:30am to 10pm. Address: 60 Lebuh Penang (Little India). 63) Sri Ananda Bahwan Authentic Pure Vegetarian Restaurant - Another Indian restaurant (opposite Woodlands, number 62). Delicious and cheap food here too. Opens early, about 6am, and close late, I think about 10:30pm or 11pm.

64) Hui Sin Chinese Vegetarian Restaurant (open about 8 to 5pm, Monday to Friday). Tasty food, selected yourself from lots of dishes on display. Very popular, particularly at lunch, with office workers. A plate of rice and 3 or 4 dishes will cost about 4 Ringgit upwards. On Lebuh China, in the Little India area.

78) Night Food Court - On Lebuh Leith, this place has lots of individual stalls and is popular. Opens at about 6pm, I think.

79) Restoran Japan Obake Ya - Smart looking Japanese restaurant on Lebuh Leith street.

83) Old House Cafe - On Lebuh Kimberley in Chinatown, this coffee shop is housed in a wonderful old building. Open 12 midday to 3pm, 6pm to 10:30pm. Closed Tuesdays.

90) EE Beng Vegetarian Restaurant - A favorite place for many, the food here is tasty and cheap. You help yourself, scoop your own rice (brown or white) and add the dishes...at busy times, the selection is huge, perhaps 50 dishes...my favorite is the steamed broccoli and the pumpkin dishes. Plates with rice and a few dishes cost from about 3.5 Ringgit. Opens early at 6am or 6:30am...closes at about 9pm. Noodle soup in the morning costs about 2.5 Ringgit. On Lebuh Dickens.

92) Zhu Yuan Air-Con Vegetarian Chinese Restaurant - On Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, close to the shopping area of Prangin Mall

94) Indonesian Food - Small, simple restaurant. Popular Indonesian dishes, including gado-gado (peanut based dish). On Lebuh Tamil, in the Chinatown area.

99) Beach Blanket Babylon at The Mansion - Housed in a lovely, majestic building by the sea, this place advertises itself as a beach bar and seaside terrace. There's also a restaurant here - Restoran Thirty Two. On Lebuh Farquhar (Farquhar Street).

100) Restoran Jaya 24 hours - Indian food with maslaa thosai's for about 2 Ringgit. Handy that it's open 24 hours. On Jalan Penang.

101) 24 hr Kassim Mustafa Tandoori Restaurant - Popular Indian restaurant with tasty looking food, open around the clock.

51) Penang Tourism Information Centre - Housed in a lovely building (see pic 1 & 2 (open in new window)) tourist offices work more relaxed hours in Malaysia than Thailand! Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. There's another tourist information office near to Fort Cornwallis, shown in the top right hand corner of the map above, open at similar times.

75) Cheap Internet - 2 Ringgit per hour. Friendly staff here. On Love Lane, very close to Lebuh Chulia. Open from 9am to about 11pm.

82) One Stop Cultural Bazaar - Smart looking, large shop selling antiques, collectables and arts and crafts. Address: 100 Lebuh Cintra (p.s: you might find better bargains at markets and smaller, less touristy shops!)
