1) Mayflower Grande Hotel - Lovely rooms, really great and competitively priced. The standard, for 990 baht were large. I'd say if you have the money, it'd be an idea to pay 1,190 baht a night and you'll get a comfy looking sofa. The suite rooms with sofa has beds for 3 or 4 people and costs 1,800 baht a night. If you're a backpacking trio, this might be the place to splurge as you'll get luxury for only 600 baht each! The rooms have great light wooden floors and bathtubs. I hope they don't put their prices up! TeL: +66 (0)74 234 888 / 230 120 Email: mayflowergrande@hotmail.com Address: 150, Sangchan Road.

There's also inexpensive food and drinks here. At the entrance to the guesthouse is a travel agency where you can book bus tickets and more. The following places are more apartment places where you can rent for a good price monthly:

50) Chudchada Place - nice, modern and clean looking apartment complex with daily rooms at 450 baht and monthly stays at just 4,000 baht. It gets full here - I couldn't see any of the rooms because of this - they didn't have a room free for a further 2 weeks. Certainly a consideration I think, especially for longer stays. It's on a quiet street, a few hundred meters from the bus station. Tel: +66 (0)74 420 444 Address: 54, Thungsao 1 Soi 3 Road.

51) Cosy Place - Large, new, apartment building with a clean feel to it. Rooms are 500 baht daily but monthly costs are 6,000 baht (4 months and over, 5,000 baht). The rooms have a new feel and are a decent size with air-con, hot shower. If you stay monthly you'll get a mattress but no sheets and no TV - you'll get these things for daily stays. Security is very good here. Wifi for your laptop is 400 baht a month, of 5 hours will cost you a reasonable 50 baht. A problem you might have is the distance from the center of the town - it's quite a way out so a motorbike or bicycle would be very handy. Tel: +66 (0)74 245 000 Website: www.cosyplacehatyai.com. (opens in new window) Address: 435 Thammanoonvithi Road.

52) VC Apartment - Quite nice, simple, largish room with air-con, TV, hot water shower and free internet (only in some of the rooms). A bit overpriced daily rate of 500 baht (can bargain to 450 or lower) but set up more as a monthly place, at 4,500 baht a month (7,500 baht deposit). Very central to the shopping areas. Tel: +66 (0)74 262 349 / 261 569

53) Thungsao Mansion - Apartment style place that looked nice, a few hundred meters from the bus station. Rooms are 500 baht nightly (deposit 500 baht) or 4,000 baht monthly. I just saw photos of the rooms and they looked quite nice. Tel: +66 (0)74 262 657 (can replace the last 2 digits with 58, 59, 60 to get through). Address: 140 Thunsao 2 Road.

54) TD Resident - Large, apartment style place, not far from the bus station. I didn't see the rooms here, priced at 480 baht nightly (5,000 baht monthly), 650 baht nightly (8,000 baht monthly) and 850 baht nightly (no monthly). Tel: +66 (0)74 559 595 Address 164 Chotwittayakul 5 Road.

55) President Hotel - (a hotel, not an apartment place) Large hotel. The rooms, priced at 600 baht (standard) and 1,200 baht (suite) were OK, quite airy, but felt a bit old. Tel: +66 (0)74 349500 (can change the last digit with 1 to 5 to get through). Address: 420 Phetkasem Road.

There are many market stalls in the area north of Thamanoonvithee Road, along Niphat Uthit 1, 2 and 3. This is also the main restaurant area of the city too, particularly along Thamanoonvithee Road and Sanehanusorn Road.
