Khon Kaen Hotels
Khon Kaen Hotels tend to be of a good standard and there's some great deals to be had.
If you want to print this map, go to THIS PAGE. (opens in new window). For the best quality printing, make sure you save it to your computer and print, rather than printing straight from the internet.
If you need to see the map more clearly, click HERE to see the left hand side of the map and HERE for the right hand side. To head to my page about Khon Kaen and surrounding National Parks and more, click HERE.
To get to the Vietnamese Consulate, head along Srichan Road and take the first left along Cata Phadung Road. You'll find the consulate on the right hand side of the road.
All the rooms below come with private bathroom and hot shower unless I say - actually, the time I spent in the city, in April, it was so hot I didn't want a hot shower. Any monthly rates means you'll have to pay electric bills (can be expensive if you're always using the air-con)
1) Garden View - Really great rooms - Modern looking with futon style beds, air-conditioning, nice TV and free cable internet. Just 350 baht per night. Security looks good with video cameras at the front desk. Down small Robmuang Soi 15 street. Tel: +66 (0)43 320264 but you may have trouble communicating as the 2 people I met weren't good at English. Only about 600 or 700 hundred meters from Kaen Nakorn Lake.
2) Pu Ya Da - Nice, modern, clean looking rooms with free wifi interent and comfy looking bed and TV. Click HERE (opens in new window) to see photos of the rooms and the building.
There's no English sign at this hotel. The daily rate for the air-con rooms is 300 baht. If you want to stay longer, there's great deals here but because of this, there may not be a room free, especially during March and April. Just 4,000 a month for an air-con room and 3,000 baht monthly for a fan room. You can call them: Mobile - 081 5924555 - good luck though as they didn't seem to speak a word of English! Down quiet Robmuang Soi 17 Road, just 500 or so meters from popular Kaen Nakorn Lake.
3) Sopon Deema Hotel - Large, 120 room hotel with, I remember, nice smelling rooms! Good value for money - just 250 baht per night for the fan rooms and you get wifi internet for your laptop and a TV. The air-con rooms will cost you 350 baht nightly. As with many lower cost hotels in Khon Kaen, the staff didn't speak English well so think about getting a translator if you want to call: Tel +66 (0)43 321562 (last digit can be changed to 3,4 or 5 to get through), but with so many rooms, there's a good chance there'll be one free. On not too busy Cheethakhon Road, number 113.
4) Piman Garden - Stylish hotel in the northern part of the town center close to both bus stations and close by to popular street stalls. The 57 rooms are priced at 650 baht, 800 baht (balcony) and 950 baht per night. All come with TV and free wifi for your laptop. I particularly like the 950 baht rooms - the room is excellent value for this price - it's large with a comfy looking sofa and large TV and generally very nicely furnished. The staff speak English well - Tel: +66 (0)43 334111 / 334724 Have a look at their website: www.pimangarden.com. (opens in new window) Address: 6/110 Klangmuang Road. Email: info@pimangarden.com
5) Pullman Hotels and Resorts (used to be the Sofitel Hotel) - Huge 293 room hotel that dominates the skyline for kilometers around. Real business class rooms with luxury desk (something I'm envious of right now!), amazingly furnished and a very comfortable looking bed and free internet for your laptop, DVD machine (with free rentals), a bathtub and safe. Find out more on their website: www.pullmanhotels.com. (opens in new window) (you'll have to click on Thailand, then Khon Kaen). Rooms range from 2,550 baht per night up to 5650 baht nightly for a wonderful looking suite room. With the room price comes a 500 baht food voucher that you can use anywhere inside the hotel. There's also a tasty looking bakery with reasonably priced breads as well as restaurants (including Chinese and Vietnamese), swimming pool and fitness center (non-guests can use for 175 baht for gym and pool) and more. Tel: +66 (0)43 322 155. Off Prachasamran Road, near to the Kosa shopping center (look up in the air to spot it!) Email: pullman@pullmankhonkaen.com
6) Charoen Thani Princess - Another huge hotel with 320 rooms. Huge, stylish lobby area. The rooms look great. The cheapest, 'superior' rooms were just 999 baht per night (this may change, usual price 1,400 baht). The corner rooms look lovely at 2,500 baht, as did the Junior Suite room I saw at 3,500 baht per night. At the front desk reception, I overhead an Aussie man saying the hotel had the best breakfast buffet selection he'd had in Thailand...For more info, have a look at their website: www.dusit.com. (opens in new window) You can approach the hotel from 2 large entrances, one on Srichan Road and the other on Namuang Road. If you're having trouble locating it, look skywards as it towers up in the air. Tel: +66 (0)43 220400 Email: ctpk@dusit.com
7) Kosa Hotel - Very large hotel very close to both (5) and (6). The lobby area is nice - I didn't get to see the rooms...see for yourself on the website: www.kosahotel.com. (opens in new window) Rooms are priced between 1,330 and 1,760 baht per night. They also have Executive rooms (3,850 baht/night), President (15,400 baht a night) and Statesman (23,100 per night) but consult their website for any changes/offers. There a small gym, sauna and pool that non-guests can use for a very reasonable 100 baht and a 1,200 baht monthly charge. Tel: +66 (0)43 320320 Email: reservation@kosahotel.com Approach from either Srichan Road or Prachasmaran Road.
8) Phu Inn - Decent rooms with air-con and TV and free wifi internet for your laptop for 350 baht per night (9,000 baht monthly). Very close to the Air-Con Bus Terminal and not from a main shopping center. The staff's English wasn't great but OK. Tel: +66 (0)43 243174 (can replace the last digit with 5 and 6 to get through).
9) Pennueng Hotel - Large 200 room hotel with simple but clean and nice rooms. TV, small fridge, air-con and wifi for your laptop. Price: Single- 380 baht per night. Double - 430 baht per night. Address: on quite quiet Chainarong Road. Tel: +66 (0)43 322051 (can change the last digit to 2,3 or 4 to get through). They reception ladies didn't speak English well so you might require a translator...
10) Saensamran Hotel - Popular with budget travelers, it has nice wooden floors and simple fan rooms that can get warm in the heat of the day, but you can cool off under the cold shower (no hot shower here). Rooms cost 170 baht, 200 baht (newer mattress) and the 250 baht rooms can sleep 4 people. The rooms have a 'lived in' feel but a whole host of cleaning ladies help to keep the rooms looking decent and will clean your room daily without asking! The male owner, who you'll sometimes see, speaks excellent English and is very pleased to offer any help you might have. Security is good here - there's constantly at least one person on the front reception which you don't always get with budget guesthouses. You can use a communal TV room here.
11) Roma Hotel - Very large hotel near to both bus town center bus stations. Rooms are varied - I was shown a simple, clean looking room for 230 baht with TV but other rooms I poked a look at weren't so nice. Air-conditioned rooms cost 500 baht per night. There's also a 'suite' room that looked nicely furnished with a sofa area for 800 baht per night. Downstairs is the popular entertainment restaurant that has live music with usually English language songs every night.
12) Bussarakam Hotel - Large, modern and stylish looking, very 'white' hotel with more than 150 rooms. The rooms looked good here and there's a large lobby area that gives the hotel a big city feel. Standard rooms cost 800/900 baht (1 or 2 people) per night, the deluxe rooms cost 1,150/1,250 baht nightly (1 or 2 people). Have a look on their website: www.bussarakamhotel.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)43 333666 Email: bussarakamhotel@yahoo.com The hotel is on Pimpasut Road. In case you were wondering, bussaraka means 'gem' or 'jewel' Thai. There's wifi internet in the rooms but it's not free like many hotels - 50 baht per hour, 150 baht per day. You can use it for free in the lobby. Things like this change quickly so visit their website for the latest info.
13) Charoenchit House - Good location, not far from Kaen Nakorn lake and just next to a large temple. Has to be the most advertised hotel in town...there are signs all over town for the place. Rooms are decent and clean, costing 400 baht per night (strangely, 330 baht if you have a business card!). You can stay here for a month for just 6,000 baht. There's free wifi in the rooms for your laptop. See their website: www.chousekhonkaen.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)43 227300 (the last digit can be changed to 1,2,3,4,5 or 6 to get through). Email: c_housekhonkaen@hotmail.com Address: Small street off either Chonchun Road or Langmuang Road.
14) Khon Kaen Hotel - Very large hotel on quite a quiet street. The standard rooms for 700/750 baht (1 person or 2 people) per night looked Ok - I was impressed with the new deluxe rooms, costing 950 baht a night, which were very modern with widescreen TV and comfortable looking. The suite rooms, for 1,200 baht per night, looked great too, with sofa, table and chairs and fridge. The rooms have baths and free wifi for your laptop. The price includes breafast. There's also a free shuttle bus between the hotel and the airport. Website: www.khonkaen-hotel.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)43 333222 Email: khonkaen-hotel@gmail.com Address: 43/2 Pimpasut Road.
15) Lakeside Condiminium - Luxurious looking apartments. Very close to popular Kaen Nakorn Lake that you can also stay in daily. Have a look at their website: www.pimangroup.com/lakesidecondo. (opens in new window) Think about booking a room if you plan to stay here. It's a very large condiminium block but all the apartments were full when I visited. Tel: +66 (0)43 911 222 Address: 165/117 Robbung Road.
16) Rosesukon Hotel - Nice looking hotel that had a certain 1970's feel to it (not that I was around much in the 70's!). Was it the velvety looking lobby, I'm not sure! Thay have been open for a long time, but only since 1984! The rooms are fairly large and nicely decorated, costing either 600 or 700 baht a night. Conveniently located near to both bus stations. Tel: +66 (0)43 236899 / 236941 / 236909 / 237797 Address: 1/11 Klangmuang Rd. The nice man I chatted to at reception said that the hotel is slow with the hi-tech revolution so they're yet to have a website or email.
17) Kaen Inn Hotel - Very large popular, 160 room hotel that has all sorts of things happening downstairs that I didn't look into (karaoke and cabaret and more I think). Rooms looked a bit old but were OK. 700 baht a night for the deluxe rooms. 1,400 baht nightly for the suite rooms with sofa area and TV. Internet will cost you 50 baht per hour in your room. Website: www.northeast-hotel.com. (opens in new window) Tel: +66 (0)43 245420 (the last 2 digits can be replaced with 21 all the way to 31 to get through). Email: kaeninnhotel@yahoo.com
18) Kaen Nakorn Hotel - Very large, 180 room hotel with cheap rooms. Fan rooms are 270 baht a night. The air-con rooms are quite large and cost 390 baht nightly. Some rooms have windows, others don't and didn't feel airy. Internet in your room will cost you a steep 50 baht per hour. Tel: +66 (0)43 224268 (last 2 digits can be replaced with 69, 70 and 71 to get through). You might need a translator if you ring as the receptonists I spoke with didn't speak English well. Address: 690 Srichan Road
19) Sawasdee Hotel - Looks nice from the outside but I wasn't overly impressed with the rooms for the price, although they are very central, close to both main shopping complexes. The 73 rooms cost between 400 baht and 890 baht per night. Tel: +66 (0)43 221 600 Email: thesawasdee@hotmail.com Address: 177-179 Namuang Road.
20) Tamarind - Nice looking apartment hotel that offers rooms daily and monthly. I wasn't overly enthusiastic with the rooms I saw in terms of size and value for money. Prices range from 300 baht (fan) up to 750 baht a night for a larger room with air-con (you couldn't really call it a 'suite' like they describe). The longer you stay, the cheaper the rooms. 1 month and the rooms cost between 6,000 and 11,000 baht. 2 months and the price drops to between 5,000 and 9,600 baht per month. A 3 month stay and you can pay between 4,000 and 8,000 baht per month. It is popular and it seems many young Thai students are staying here. Have a look on their website: www.tamarind-khonkaen.com.
21) Chaipat Hotel - Looks very swish and modern from the outside but the rooms aren't great by any stretch of the imagination and the rooms aren't rock bottom priced, at 400 or 500 baht per night. There's a karaoke place on the ground floor. Tel: +66 (0)43 333055 (last digit can be replace with 6,7,8 or 9 to get through) - might require a translator over the phone at this hotel! Address: Off Namuang Road.
22) Muang Inn Hotel - Not sure about this place as the manager was quite happy to let me see the rooms when he thought I was a guest but didn't want me to see them when I told him I had a website. Priced at either 290 or 350 baht a night.
23) DK Apartment - Apartment is interesting terminology for the place - rooms didn't look nice or particularly clean but they did have a TV and are just 160 baht a night...and, it's on a nice quiet street. Would have been OK for me a few years ago, but not now! Address: 86/21 Samakeeuthis Road.
24) Hotel with no English Name - If you're really on a budget you can stay in the fan rooms here with shared bathroom for just 100 baht. Private bathrooms cost 150 baht a night and air-con rooms cost 300 baht a night. The rooms looked unclean and I didn't fancy sleeping on the bed. Better option next door (see number 10).
25) Glacier - Not open yet! I'll keep you updated...it looks like it'll be a very modern, stylish place.
26) Khon Kaen Orchid - I didn't visit here but see their website: www.khonkaenorchid.com. (opens in new window) Rooms for 550 / 650 baht daily. Tel: +66 (0)43 334000 Email: khonkaenorchid@yahoo.com Address: 149/96 Soi Wat Pachaiyawan
Mittraphap Road
27) Vanthip (NO English Sign though) - Down a quiet residential street, this small hotel has quite a homely feel, run by a friendly Thai couple who's English is limited. The fan rooms are 200 baht, the air-con rooms, 300 baht. The fan room I saw had a comfy looking bed and TV - there's wasn't much ventilation so perhaps see if you can get a room with more windows. Telphone (with translator!): +66 (0)43 334146. On Ammart Soi 5 Road.
The following 4 hotels are grouped in an area with 2 or 3 other hotels. This area is about 600 meters or so south of the train station, so it's still quite central, but the walk north towards the station on Darunsamran Road isn't that pleasant as there's no pavement and it's unlit at night. Most who stay in this area are Thais with their own transport. Having said that, it's popular because the rooms are very good value....most of the rooms I saw looked very nice for about 300 baht.
28) Hotel with no English name - Large apartment style hotel with nice lobby area. The clean, modern, air-con rooms cost 350 baht a night and have a comfy looking bed. Most stay here for the good monthly deals...just 4,000 baht per month + bills (TV 300 baht per month extra). Telephone with translator: +66 (0)43 325383 / 325444
29) Mammoth Resort - The room I saw here for 350 baht a night had attractive wooden flooring, and looked nice to stay in. They also have 250 baht rooms. Telephone with translator (I'm not holding out much hope for your Thai language skills - sorry!) +66 (0)43 325077 Mobile: 089 7826608 / 081 4053943
30) Baan Tonsoi KhonKaen - Nicely decorated, very clean rooms priced at 300 or 350 baht per night. Free wifi on floor 2 and 3. One of the ladies I spoke with spoke English well: Tel: +66 (0)43 324961 Mobile: 089 420 5053
31) Darlington Place - Not quite as nice as next door (number 30 on my list) but still good value. Rooms are 320 baht nightly. Telephone with translator: +66 (0)43 324351
Opposite number 28 on my list is Penthouse Hotel with daily rooms from 300 to 350 baht per night (opportunities, I think to stay monthly here). The place was busy and popular so there's a good chance the rooms are nice here too.
32) NK Guesthouse - A bit further down dark Darunsamran Road but this hotel has a very quiet residential location. Worth a look if you're on a budget as the rooms are decent and cost either 200/250/300 baht per night. Not as modern as the previous 4 hotels but it has a friendly feel here.
33) Grand Leo Hotel - Large hotel very close to the Kosa shopping center so a central location. Just saw pictures of the rooms - they looked OK, costing about 400 baht per night. Tel: +66 (0)43 227745 (last 2 digits can be replaced with 46, 47, 48 or 49 to get through). Address: 62-62/1 Srichan Road.
One more hotel - At the very south of Kaen Nakorn Lake is quite a large hotel with no English name on any sign but they call themselves B & B Place. It has a good position, being so close the lake. Rooms are quite nice, costing 550 baht a night. (46 rooms). There's just 2 deluxe rooms costing 650 baht a night. There's free wifi and free coffee in the morning. There's a restaurant here and you can order room service between 7am and 11pm. Tel: +66 (0)43 322999 Mobile: 089 4188899
Key to the Letters on the Map
A) Thad Temple - Very large temple with chedi just next to Kaen Nakorn Lake. There's a Buddhist University here too. The temple was built towards the end of the 18th century at the time of the start of the city itself...but recently the temple you can see now, soaring 45 meters in the air, was built over the original crumbling temple.B) Srinuan Temple C) Khon Kaen National Museum - I didn't go inside this museum - it's quite a large building set in a large garden area. The museum cost 100 baht for foreigners (20 baht for Thais) and is open Wednesdays to Sundays, between 9am and 4pm. The grounds can be entered free of charge and there's plenty of benches to have a sit. The main entrance gate is open from 7:30am to 4:30pm but the side entrance gate opens between 5am and 7:30pm. If you want to see the museum leaflet that I was given so that you get an idea of what's inside, click 1, 2, 3 and 4 (all open in new window). D) Vegetarian Restaurant - tasty food on wholegrain rice, including green and masaman (Indian style) curry. 3 small servings and rice cost 30 baht (upgrade to 40 baht if you're hungry!) Walking past, there's no English sign. It's an open air restaurant, directly opposite Rosesukon Hotel. If you're not sure and don't speak Thai, say 'kin jay' (eat vegetarian). E) KOSA Shopping Center - Quite large air-conditioned shopping center with plenty of brand name restaurants. There's a cinema here but they seem to be dubbed into Thai - in fact, I don't think there's any English language cinema in Khon Kaen. F) Hong Moon Mung Khon Kaen City Museum - Open 9am to 5pm. Admission: 90 baht for foreigners, 20 baht for Thais. A bit small with not a great deal inside. Most information is in both Thai and English although an interactive feature was just in Thai. After 30 minutes, I was ready to leave. Just next to Kaen Nakorn Lake. G) Khon Kaen Ram Hospital H) Khon Kaen Post Office - 2 Post offices in town (each given the letter H on my map). I) Tourist Information Center - Think it's open from 9am to 5pm, daily. Useful information at this office, as with all tourist offices in Thailand now, it seems. Given not only information about Khon Kaen and surroundings but also a good map of Thailand and the north east region. If you find you're talking to staff who are not too good at English, they're probably students...try to speak to the staff who speak English well. J) Seven's Corner - Popular expat bar that has a large sign saying 'To save water, drink beer'. K) Sorrento - Restaurant serving among other food, sushi. It's below Roma Hotel. It stands out because of its nightly live singing of mainly English songs, just next to the street, starting about 7pm. L) Tangkwa Chong Coffee Shop - Small air-conditioned coffee shop with coffees and more between about 25 and 40 baht. Free wifi here. Open daily between 9:30am and 8:30pm. M) Vegetarian Restaurant opposite the National Museum. You must head down a small street but there's a large yellow saying saying "Vegetarian' - the yellow sign indicating it's Chinese style. It's nice inside - partly open air with attached shop selling all things meat-free. Dishes cost about 30 baht. The restaurant's open between 6am and 2:30pm. The shop is open between 6am and 6pm. N) Khaen Thong Children's Home, Khon Kaen - Because of the English sign,I think they would like foreign visitors to spend time with the kids. P) Darha Spa - Nice looking spa down a quiet street. Q) Phoenontan Temple - Large temple that (unique to me) has an interesting jungle scene with monkeys and elephants to attract children. For car hire and motorbike hire, there are quite a few places near to Srichan Road that I've marked and drawn an arrow to on the map above. Price for a motorbike for a day is about 200 baht. For a car, it depends on the type, but the price will start at about 1,000 baht daily. For longer rentals, you should be able to bargain and lower the daily rate. At the Stadium on Lao Na Dee Road, there's a large swimming pool that costs about 30 baht a swim. It's closed one day a week - if my memory serves me correctly, Thursday! It gets busy in the late afternoon but if you're there when the sun's high during the day, you'll probably not be sharing with many people. The actual stadium is open from 4:30am to 8pm every day of the week - you could go for a run around the stadium of perhaps try to join an informal game of football in the late afternoon. For a more expensive swim you can head to hotels number 5 and 7 on my hotel list above.
Return from Khon Kaen Hotels to Isaan (the North East).
